Plant Your Mums After The Season

These are blooming now on our hill.
They are mums from last year.
They were in our large planters on the patio.
I threw them on our burn pile after the season.
Joe rescued them and planted them on the hill.

I did pinch back the buds in the summer.
That gets you more blooms.

Joe is not the gardener in the family but he is the thrifty one.

If you have not been planting your mums, after the season, give it a try.
Remember to pinch (called stopping in Britain)
back the buds in the summer so they do not
get leggy and they will produce more blooms.
Stop pinching in July.
The plants need 90 days to produce their blooms.

We are in zone 8 and have mild winters.
I cannot speak for colder zones and mums in the ground.

  3. I have tried planting mums after the season and not had success. I guess the winters are too cold in Ontario. Maybe I could cover them with straw and they would over winter. ~ Maureen

  9. Your mums look great Olive! I've overwintered them in containers, but never put them in the ground. I think I will try that this year since I bought so many.

  11. Smart Joe for replanting! I had never heard of having to take your bulbs and plants out of the garden before. It's nice to live in a place where we can just throw things in the ground and (almost) forget about them - until they bloom-bloom - bloom!

(thanks for the tip on my comments not showing up. All fixed now!)

  13. Well thank goodness for Joe's thrifty ways because they're gorgeous!...I wish I had a hill to plant some on *winks* My backyard is about the size of a postage stamp.

And on another note...that guy stole those shoes right in front of you at the Goodwill???Sheesh that's shameless. I do think I would've offered to pay for them too because he must have REALLY needed them!*winks* Vanna

  14. They're beautiful Olive! Thanks for the tip. I just might plant my mums rather then throw them out. Enjoy your evening my friend, Gail

  15. Do you pinch them back when they are done blooming in the fall, or do you just cut the entire plant back?

    1. Pinch them in the summer prior to July. I leave them alone in the winter.

  17. Beautiful color! How great that they came back for you, I never had much luck but it was probably that lack of pinching thing:@)

  20. I hope you bake Joe a pie for saving those plants! :) They are gorgeous and I do that too. Sometimes my mum survive and sometimes they don't. My thumb's not too green.
Thank you for your comments to me Olive and I really appreciate you.
    You are a sweetie,

  21. I have done that before. Way to go!
I have one mum that I was given in the spring. I have faithfully pinched it back every time it gets leggy, waiting for autumn for it to bloom again.
But I lost interest in it a few days ago....and it might be dead now:(

  22. Oh Olive...I have 2 mums sitting in my garage that I was going to throw away. I really should go plant them shouldn't I? I'll add that to my list. :o) Hope you are feeling better!

  24. Hi Olive, so glad Joe rescued all those pretty mums!... we are in Zone 5 and have really harsh winters... I always plant my Fall mums from pots into the garden, and right now they too are putting on a show!... soon, I will plant the two on my porch before the ground freezes... Mums certainly say "Autumn" don't they?... xoxo Julie Marie

  25. Wow! Those look great, Olive! I'll have to remember the pinching part. I only bought one for a pot this year and another that I put directly in the ground. I used to have quite a few at our old house and people would always be so surprised that I had them from seasons past.
