Embroidered State Flowers

We went to garage sales Saturday.

Joe is a riot at them.

He loves to haggle and is very good at it.

I found something so beautiful and well made by hand that I do not think I could have haggled.

It turns out I did not need to.

Look at what I found:

A map of the United States with each state flower named and embroidered on it.

The detail is remarkable.

Look at the North Carolina dogwood tree.

We have a dogwood theme going on right now at Olive Out.

In the next post I will share a pink dogwood in bloom now.

I bought this from an older couple and the man said his mother did it and it took her a very long time to complete.

I can imagine it did.

I told him I would take very good care of it as I handed him the three dollars.

Yes, just three dollars.

Remember I said no haggling was required this time.

It was not easy to photograph and is much more pretty in person.

My walls are freakishly blue above when in fact they are yellow.

But do you see how cool this piece of embroidery is?

  8. So much work....wonder of the maker would be sad that her son valued it so little? More likely she'd be pleased that it went to a good home.

  28. OMG!! Three dollars??!! What an amazing piece you stole there! *winks* I can only IMAGINE how long it took to do that! Too funny about your hubbs being the hard core bargainer. I always ask my hubby to ask for the discount because he always gets a better price than me *winks* And Olive your comment at my place about the silk dressing gown? It cracked me up!...Because I have a tatty ole brown robe that I won't get rid of (alas not silk) and I live in jeans or sweats!Lol! So much for glam huh? Vanna

  29. This is truly beautiful and lead me to research and learn something about my home state. Oklahoma actually has three state flower/emblems: The state floral emblem is the mistletoe, state wildflower is the Indian Blanket, and the official state flower is the hybrid tea rose "Oklahoma." Thank you!

  36. Yes, it was a kit sold through either Woman's Day or Family Circle magazine many years ago (maybe mid-1970s?); if my memory serves me correctly (always a dicey matter..) the price was 11.99 plus postage. They provided a pretty decent piece of linen and high quality cotton floss, to be used a single strand at a time and the piece was somewhat slow, but fun, to make up but I always loved the finished piece. Lost it when the house burned to the ground 15 years ago, so sure enjoying these photos.

  45. Sorry about all those repeats, got in some sort of loop and I had to shut down connection to stop it sending repeats--first time that's ever happened. Also see it removed my name but so much for making me invisible!

  46. I cannot believe this! My mom (85yo) made one of these years ago and she has it framed just like your picture and hanging in her kitchen. She has promised it to me when she is gone and it will be a very treasured piece for me. She bought the kit to make it from Better Homes and Garden magazine.

  47. Hi Olive Art, I was wondering if you could tell me where you bought this? My grandmother made one of these when I was a child. When she passed away, my mother & father sold all her belonging while I was away working in London. We originally lived in North Babylon, Long Island, New York. I have been thinking about this for many years & just stumbled on your post. It couldn't be that same one that she made, could it? Thanks in advance. Best regards, Billy

  48. I just found this very same piece identical to yours at our local Goodwill for $1.99! I was so excited when I came across it but sad at the same time. I can not imagine the hours spent creating it only for it to end up in a Goodwill for a couple bucks. I am happy I have the privilege to save it and place it somewhere in my home .
