A sure September surprise is Spider Lilies popping up
in unexpected places at our old house.
I like to think they have been here for a hundred years.
After all the house was here prior to the Civil War.
There seems to be no plan as to where they are located.
They pack a lot of beauty in their brief appearance.
After the blooms fade is a good time to move them.
We shall be taking a few to the yellow house this year.
Southern Living magazine has an article about them this month too.
As they are one of my favorite flowers I will be linking to
Claudia's A Favorite Thing Saturday.

Pretty little surprises. When does the foliage appear?
ReplyDeleteAround the first of September. They are found at old home sites here in the south usually. I do not think I have ever seen for sale any where.
DeleteWow - they are lovely...I bet they wouldn't survive outside in the great white north...
ReplyDeleteWe always called them "Surprise Lillies" and I only recently found out they were really "Spider Lillies!"
ReplyDeleteThey are so beautiful....I never knew the name of them until now. Thanks for sharing them :o)
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday!

I've never seen those kind of lilies before. They do look like spiders lying on their backs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful surprise popping up here and there!
ReplyDeleteI'm always so surprised and happy when something pops up in the late summer! These are so pretty!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
They are beautiful - I read that they were originally from China where they were then imported into Japan and from there to America. Apparently they now grow wild in North Carolina - is that where you live Olive? I would love to have some in my garden but they are not frost hardy, so they would have to be a conservatory plant, or be planted in a sheltered bit of land beside a wall. Lovely, the first time I have seen them.
ReplyDeleteWe are in Georgia. But I see them is many parts of the deep South Rosemary.
DeleteOlive, I have never heard of this lily...but I like how unusual it is. Pretty color too. Smiles, Susie
ReplyDeleteSo pretty and how fun that they show up a certain time of year. I hope you are feeling well, Olive. Ann
ReplyDeleteHi Olive. I love your Spider Lillies. I have never seen or heard of them before! How lovely to live in such an old house, and it will be really good to take some of these Lillies up to the yellow house, where, hopefully, they will bloom next year. Hope all is well with you and your little family.

ReplyDeleteThat plant is new to me and has a rather dramatic flare to it. From a couple of comments above I can see it wouldn't be too happy in my area. It's really pretty, Olive.
ReplyDeleteOlive, I love the idea that a flower may have been from the civil war era!
ReplyDeleteOlive, How wonderful to have such a lovely flower bloom when everything else is wilting. Just beautiful!
