Garden Blooms

Phlox, or I have always called it thrift, has finally made it in my garden.
I have lost several in our heat.

Sweet William

This snapdragon has bloomed all winter and quadrupled in size.

A chickadee has built a nest in this old birdhouse.
We can observe her from the kitchen window.

The Knockout Roses will be blooming next week.

Bridal Veil Spirea is one of my favorite bushes.
It holds many childhood memories for me.
This one is still small and difficult to photograph but I am overjoyed
to see these mini white clouds of flowers.

The aloe vera in the twig wreath made it through the winter in the lawn mower shed.
I have been outside for about three hours this morning combating weeds.
It is a fine day. Today's high will be 80 degrees.
Perfect weather to sit on the deck, read, and listen to bird song.

What's blooming in your garden?

  1. Thank you for the photos and garden update -- they are so inspiring that I think I'm going to look for some Sweet William when it's finally time to start planting here in New Jersey!

  2. Nothing here except crocus. The daffs all have yellow heads tightly curled. So, lovely to look at your garden.

  3. So pretty, especially the phlox. I've never heard it called "thrift."

After I called it Bridal "Bush" and you said it was "veil," my Mom said she always called it Bridal "Wreath." She's from North Alabama.

I think some Bride somewhere is carrying around a schizophrenic bouquet!!!

  6. I know it feels good to be outside and catching a few rays while pulling a weed or two. We always called Spirea 'bridal wreath'. Different names but mean the same. Love that phlox. I haven't grown that plant but I may have to find some this year. Love it.

  8. I'd like to have some knock out roses here in our flower beds. They do real well here in Florida. There are snapdragons and petunias blooming behind our house right now! Hugs!

  10. Your flowers are just beautiful. We have quite a lot of things blooming. Course, we're suppose to have a really bad night tonight with thunderstorms and then a drastic temperature drop. Hope it doesn't get cold enough to ruin anything. The phlox are blooming, the hydrangeas are budding and the hostas are growing at record speed. They always just amaze me at how fast they come up once they start.

  14. I really enjoyed your pictures, Olive. In spite of the heat, you gals in the South sure have it good with the long blooming time you have each year! I would think it's all much prettier in person. Enjoy! Oh, and I LOVE that twig nest!

I have some tulips and daffs just coming out of the ground and it looks like we lost our front lawn due to the drought last summer. I hope seeding it will do the trick, if not, sod. Thankfully it's not a huge lawn.

    Jane

  17. Beautiful bridal veil spirea. I can't seem to get it to grow here, but my mom, who used to live within 20 miles, had 2 huge spireas like that, one on each side of our front stoop. Anyway, when I was probably 8 or 9, I would pinch a branch (near the base) between my thumb and forefinger, then zip it up to the end of the branch, stripping every blossom off and giving me a little 'bouquet.' Isn't that HORRID!!! And my mother still loved me (but probably thought the bunnies got her shrub.) :-)

  23. Gorgeous. I have been digging in the dirt for a few days now. It was disappointing this year as my phlox just died off after four years. Not sure what happened. I love them.

  28. The daffodils here literally popped overnight, Olive! I was anticipating their bloom and was so glad to see them dotted about the landscape as I was driving the other morning. I am going to have to plant some bulbs around our condo this Fall so I have my own to admire. I can't wait to get some flowers in this year. Looking forward to adding some favorites into the landscaping here.

  29. Good Afternoon Olive, It is lovely to see so much colour in your garden. You have the start of an English Cottage Garden....snap dragons, phlox and sweet william. My mother, Phyllis has a beautiful, huge Spirea growing in her front garden...it must be about 30 years old, but year after year it flowers as beautifully as yours.
    Enjoy your garden.
    Best Wishes

  30. Beautiful! I miss chickadees. We had lots of them in Edmond but no sign of them here. I think there are so many hawks they are hiding out.
