Olive Out News

Hello friends.

Above our Broome Closet window booth at Ridge Antiques in Ridge Spring, S.C.  is pictured with our beloved blue mantle. Frankly if we do not sell that mantle any time soon I will not mind. We have filled it with bunnies and items that bring spring to mind.

I also have this affinity for galvanized metal so watering cans and radiator water cans have made their way into the booth. Buckets are populating the floor. Right now all items are 50% off unless marked firm. We are cleaning house for spring.

In Olive Out news we are at 30 truck loads of limbs and trees to our second lot from the ice storm. Along with that clean up I have been doing my February gardening. February is a huge gardening month for me. I am getting behind as it is March! Joe helped me plant three David Austin roses.   Spring is upon us whether I am ready or not.

Joe mowed that large section of  green monkey grass (lilirope) on Saturday. It must be done before the green shoots pop out. You can see some debris in the foreground. Small stuff like that we are leaving for now.

Saturday I was resting in the chaise for a minute and heard a chain saw very close. A man was in our oak tree sawing away and throwing limbs in our clean yard. It was a FEMA crew. They said someone would be here in two days to pick up the limbs. Our neighbor astutely said "And I believe in the Tooth Fairy."No pick up crew yet and they cut limbs that did not need cutting. Oh and they cut an electric line and our power was off for five hours that night. It is exciting here but not in a good way.

I cannot recall a time when I was this fatigued except perhaps after childbirth. Maybe that analogy does not hold. However I am sore all over and fear I have torn my left rotator cuff. Not to mention my back is hurting and I seldom have back pain.  I know you are not here to hear my whining but this is our life at the moment. Joe is about the same and has to go to work.

I miss blogging and wish I could get into some sort of routine once more. I thank my new and loyal followers. I am thankful for the kinship found here.

joy and peace
Olive

  2. I feel your pain. It's crazy here too but in different ways. Just think how pretty your yard will be when all the limbs are cleaned up and your work shines through. :) Hope you feel better - take an Advil. That cures all in my book. ;)

  3. Torn rotator not good! Ditto FEMA.
I am on the lookout for galvanized watering cans, but not until I can see the ground.

It's hard not to over do it when there's so much to do. LOVE the pretty things on display. Wish I was passing through to shop for Spring pretties! Sweet hugs, Diane

  8. 30 loads of trees, branches and brash must seem never ending. Hope your poor back and your arms have some respite soon. It's really hard this year trying to clear up after the storms. I'm beginning to feel my age, trying to sort the mess out here - but the Spring IS coming, it really is .... and I love all your galvanize watering cans

  11. Oh Olive I am so sorry for all the pain.. This Winter has caused us all to have extra yard work with tree limbs down.. I dragged my to the sideyard last week. We had ice and snow again this past weekend..I know I have lots to do in a few weeks... I am so tired of snow and cold.. so ready for Spring.. I cannot imagine seeing green popping through the ground... how wonderful! Until then.... I am just hoping the sun will come out and melt away the snow and that it does not return....Blessings!

  12. Roll on the better weather Olive, and hopefully you can then have some time to relax. Imagine all of that debris to remove - 30 truck loads - no wonder your poor back aches.

  15. I think we have cleared all the large and medium limbs and have just those aggravating tiny limbs left before we start mowing. Aiken is allowing us to put it all on the street which means a monumental driving obstacle course to get through the neighborhood. Frankly I am worried about the critters that might take up residence in the piles - some are as tall as the houses. Where do you have to haul yours?

You can whine all you want, friend, as long as you blog about it!

  17. Sorry you aren't feeling well. That's the pits, isn't it? Hope you get to feeling much better real soon. That storm will really leave an impression for years, won't it?

    Take care.

  18. Hi Olive - I'm slowly catching up with everyone's news. So sorry about all the work left behind after the ice storm. I can relate to your fatigue and frustration as we went through a similar thiing in 2004 with a hurrican trifecta. Not to make you feel worse, but FEMA took one month to come and get the debris that was on all of our parkways. Our streets looked like tunnels. Interesting times.
Take care of yourself. Things will return to normal again, but you will always remember the strangeness of the storm aftermath. I remember feeling like I was living in a third world country as we were without power for 2 weeks and everything looked blighted. Mother Nature will restore order soon for you. She always does.

I know how my world was rocked by those storms and it was nothing in comparison to what people face after a Tsunami, earthquake (no!) or other powerful force of nature. The human spirit will persevere and I hope you can return to the new normal soon. Don't push yourself too much, it will all be there for you. Big hug to you. Ann

  20. FEMA crews are government on display in your tree.
Think of a vacation soon. Sitting by a pool with a palm tree shading you.
And FEMA isn't allowed in palm trees by order of some federal law.

  21. Hello Olive:

We simply love all of your galvanized items and have a similar collection in our 'kamra' [the Hungarian for a laundry/utility room] which we have collected over the years.

From our gardening days we remember February and March as being amongst the busiest of months. But such promise!

  22. Oh Lord! It would take me all summer to pick up 30 truck loads. No wonder you are sore all over, I have RA and can totally relate. FEMA must stand for Fast Exit Mess Abandoned!

  23. Oh Olive,
I want the blue mantle, the trunk and the watering cans …..couldn't you move to the UK and bring them with you !!!!!
    We can't grow roses very well in our back garden, apart from ramblers, as it faces North but, we have a David Austin St Swithuns rose climbing up the front of the house and it is beautiful. It flowers in May and then on and off until about October. We put it in about 20 years ago …… I think that I will get another one for the other side of our house this year { it's taken me 20 years to decide to do that !!!! haha }
Sorry to hear that you are feeling under the weather …… here's hoping that you and Joe will be back to 100% very soon.
    Lots of love. XXXX

  24. Hi Olive. Sorry I haven't been over lately! So sorry to hear about your back pain and that you're so busy. I'm afraid that I won't be able to get out into our garden for a while. Everything is still so wet :( Your house is absolutely beautiful and I adore that blue mantle! Onwards and upwards my friend. Spring is just around the corner... new life, new hopes. Hugs.

  25. Gotta love that FEMA. Where were they right after the storm when so many were without electric. Or maybe that's a good thing or they would have taken a chainsaw to your entire yard. Glad you can sort of see a light at the end of the tunnel.

  26. love the watering cans infront of that beautiful fireplace..

  27. So good to hear from you, Olive! You are having a time of it! I hope you are feeling a little more rested. Your shop vignette is certainly cheery! I love everything about it.

  28. First of all, your booth is gorgeous. Secondly, I feel so bad for you with all the tree limb news. And you might have torn your rotator cuff? Oh geez, I hope not. Are you going to go to the dr. and get an xray? I am pretty much in constant discomfort because of a rotator cuff impingement, but with acupuncture treatments, I am starting to have more good days. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way!

  29. I'm so sorry to hear that you've injured yourself. Hopefully, it won't take long to recover. Sounds like you may need to see a doctor though. I can't get over how green your grass is already! Ours looks dead right now.

  30. Sorry to hear about all of your ice damage, so hard to lose trees. We are still buried under snow, no garden work being done here. I love the watering can, I have a weakness for them. Rest up, Laura
