Deck and Patio

It has been a quest of sorts to find a table top for
the curvy metal table base you see here.
I was about to give up when I found a piece of sealed granite in a
junk shop for a ridiculously low price.
 It weighs almost 80 pounds.
Joe told me never to find a larger piece.
If an item is big and heavy I want it.

We routinely eat on the deck and bird watch.
The hummingbirds arrived early this year.
The hummers ignore us while flying from feeder to feeder.

The patio area will have flowers blooming around it shortly.
The roses and amaryllis are budding.

I basically rely on perennials but do use a good many petunias in planters.
They are not terribly thirsty and take this awful Deep South heat.

I have sweet mint (above), chocolate mint, rosemary, thyme, and basil
growing on or near the deck.
The rosemary and thyme are winter hardy here.

My first foxglove is blooming but I will share that beauty later.

  1. Wow, you are so far ahead of us. I had a few pansies under shelter but they still got snowed on last night. Frost warning tonight as well. Everything there looks so beautiful. Tell your husband that that table will not blow away for sure.

  2. Love your patio and deck too! I have also planted some container I patients and petunias. I lost my exotic fruit trees with the freeze here in Beaufort.....have a great week and hope you are feeling well.

  4. The granite looks so good on the table base. I have not yet invested in annuals because of the threat of freeze, but I do use petunias - your garden area is beautiful.

  5. That granite was a great find! Perfect for a topper. I like petunias, too. You like them for the heat and I like them because they will take a certain amount of cold, too. What a lovely area you have there to sit and enjoy the vbirds. xo Diana

  8. Oh, I can't wait till the hummers arrive. I just wrote a post about an unlikely predator the hummers have (which most are totally unaware of, including me until a few years ago!) I am hopeful that our expecting freeze warning for tonight does not kill all the buds & blooms that have struggled just to show their faces so late here in our region (WV). Your tabletop is perfect!

  19. Hello Olive:

We cannot think of anything nicer than to be eating outside on warm days and nights and your new table top seems to us very fit for purpose. Clearly at that weight it is not going to blow off the base in the first gust of wind!!

Now is such an exciting time of year with everything bursting into life. We are certain that your garden gives, and will give, you much pleasure.

  20. Dear Olive - your garden has recovered remarkably well following the icy winter storms. I know you had masses of debris to clear away, but everything is looking lovely for the spring.

  21. I noticed your table right away! I love it. At least you don't have to worry about it blowing over. Your garden will be thriving soon. And yes, we love petunias here, too, they really do well. Last year I had some pale yellow ones that looked so pretty mixed with other colors, I was surprised and will look for them again this year.

Happy Easter to all of you!

    XO,
    Jane

  23. What a lovely retreat. I have to say I'm a sucker for petunias too...especially the old fashion variety. There is nothing like their smell to lighten my mood. I bet Joe was wishing that gorgeous top was made of petunias instead of granite!

  24. Your patios are looking very festive. Just watch out for the snakes out there. Ever since you showed a photo of a snake in a pot once (what, four years ago?) I keep expecting to see one pop up out there :)

  25. Your back deck and patio area are sooo pretty! I love the way y'all used stone pavers on the ground for your patio. I've never had good luck with Foxglove. I love how they look though.
