Gallery Wall Part Two

Building a gallery wall is a little bit like having the measles.
 It's infectious.
The pictures are spreading rapidly around this corner.

I picked up the two small vintage frames, to fill the empty frame, on Saturday at a junk shop.

These two pictures were added to the right wall recently.
I framed the one on the left myself.
I picked up that pretty gold frame (it had an ugly picture inside it)
and knew it would work with that oil painting I had had for some time.
Always keep your eye open for frames regardless of what is in them.

Stay tuned as I have blank wall space on the right corner wall.

To see the Gallery Wall Part One click here.

I am on a mini vacation and am blogging from a fast food chain.
 Having problems too.
 I lost an entire post.

I hope you are having a terrific week.

Vintage Aluminum Suitcase

I spotted this incredibly cool aluminum suitcase under a table, at a garage sale, a few weeks ago.
 It did not smell good.
It's been sitting on the deck with cat litter inside it.
Today it has been cleaned and de-littered.
No odor anymore.
Bees wax was applied and now it is ready for our booth.

It's a bit rusty but that adds to the appeal for me.
The handle is heavy.
I think it has an industrial look.

Today Donna, The Rust Goddess (Distressed Donna Down Home), and I went thrifting.
We found this watercolor of magnolia blossoms from 1955.
The frame is original and is oak.

Thrifting alone is fine but with a fellow thrifter it is divine.

Vintage Oval Frame

Joe says our walls are a rotating gallery of my found art.
He could be right.
I took down the praying man picture and put up the gilded oval frame.

You can see how chippy the frame is. I paid one dollar for it.
Should I put something on it to hold it together?

I put this oil painting in it. This oil is dated 1951. It is older than me...woot.

What do you think? Should I Keep it? Sell it?

My friend Fancy and I are leaving for North Georgia for our quick trip on Thursday.
I may be scarce for a couple of days. We are going to explore North Georgia and the Pottery Barn Outlet.

Buffet in Green

I bought a green ruffled pie plate.
 Obsessed  with ruffles I am.
The pie plate lead to this concoction on our buffet.
By the way I do not bake pies.

The old buffet is good looking with spring green touches.
I think so anyhoo.

The platter is Wedgwood fine bone china.
The bowl, creamer and knives were all picked up at yard sales.

You might be dizzy after viewing these images.
I swear I was not inebriated.

Minerva is still on the right side of the buffet with the vintage riding helmet.

Joe and I ran across a stash of letters recently.
I will show you more in another post.
We were glad to get the @.

Flinging Open The Doors

It is 72 degrees outside and I know you, dear friends, are saying she has posted twice today.
Yes, yes I have.
I have been raking pine straw, weeding, and cutting back spirea shrubs.
I pulled so many weeds that my back is hurting so I fear for what tomorrow may hold so I am posting this right now.
The doors to the house are flung open.

This weekend I am cutting back all our monkey grass ( lilirope) with the lawn mower.
If you are in the Deep South February in the appropriate month for that.
Some of variegated monkey grass that I cannot get with the mower I trim with scissors.

Opening the front door warms the house tremendously.

I re-potted this ivy and I am constantly getting cuttings from him.
I think it is a male for some reason, with shaggy hair.
It came from Trader Joe's  and I should have bought one more.
I was not thinking or I was more likely thinking of Stilton cheese with apricots.
On another unrelated subject, pain gives me flight of ideas, a friend gave me a kind of folksy oil painting yesterday.

It is painted on two wood boards and I really like it and for now it is in the kitchen in an odd place beside our command calendar which I must see daily.
I cannot use electronic calendars. I am archaic, just say it I know.
Oil paintings are far better for me because they have no glass and therefore no glare and glare is my enemy.

I rarely take a photo of the little kitchen as it is functional, white and kind of plain.
I am very grateful to have it and would not trade it for another.

Thanks bunches for listening to my pain induced ramblings.

In With the Brown and Blue

In with the brown and blue.

Out with the pink.

I do like pink my darlings, I was just over the horrid pink rug with the blue butterflies. We had that very nice wool rug with a Greek key border for eight years and I wanted a less formal look. The living space at the yellow house is right off the deck and the flower garden and we are outside, via the almost French doors, all the time and the rug needs to take a beating.

Nita at Mod Vintage Life does pink the best. Please visit her blog as her Tudor home is charming and best of all so is Nita.

It is an outdoor patio rug and we like that. Some of you astute readers of Olive Out had suggested a natural fiber rug in another post when I was carrying on about the pink one. I do pay attention to every comment. After all this is porch rattan furniture {all from a garage sale}.
The print, on the stone fireplace, is framed in a metal frame and that is important and really the main reason we bought it other than the bluish gray coastal image. The fireplace causes wood frames to get very hot. We are looking for an interesting large metal something  to hang up there and we will know it when we see it.

Joe and I found the old leather suitcase at an estate sale. Joe thought me kind of nuts for buying it but that is not unusual when we thrift together. It is quite heavy and I sat it down here when I brought it in the house and like it so much right there...it stays!

The cost of the transformation:

Patio rug $35.00 garage sale
Coastal print $5.00 garage sale
Little footstool .50 cents
That's at total of $40.50

The living room in all it's pink glory.

You cannot see the butterflies in this image...that is a shame.
We still have a few touches of pink here and there. Joe has a piece of modern art {not shown} that stays of course and it has a lot of pink.

Embroidered State Flowers

We went to garage sales Saturday.

Joe is a riot at them.

He loves to haggle and is very good at it.

I found something so beautiful and well made by hand that I do not think I could have haggled.

It turns out I did not need to.

Look at what I found:

A map of the United States with each state flower named and embroidered on it.

The detail is remarkable.

Look at the North Carolina dogwood tree.

We have a dogwood theme going on right now at Olive Out.

In the next post I will share a pink dogwood in bloom now.

I bought this from an older couple and the man said his mother did it and it took her a very long time to complete.

I can imagine it did.

I told him I would take very good care of it as I handed him the three dollars.

Yes, just three dollars.

Remember I said no haggling was required this time.

It was not easy to photograph and is much more pretty in person.

My walls are freakishly blue above when in fact they are yellow.

But do you see how cool this piece of embroidery is?

Art is Like...

I once worked with a nurse who had an interesting career path.

She was a licensed cosmetologist.

She had a music degree.

In her mid-forties she became a RN.

I was one of her nurse preceptors.

I taught her how to swim not sink in the hospital unit we worked on and she taught me about art.

She was a member of a community theatre group and I loved to attend the plays she acted in.

She once told me that art is like flowers on the table.

She said we may not need or always have flowers on the table but flowers fill out and complete the table just like art enriches our lives.

I have never forgotten her analogy.

Hi V. where ever you are!

Estate Sales Will Be My Undoing

Estate sales will be my undoing.

The past two estate sales have been exceptional.

On day two the seller discounts every item fifty percent except for very large items.

It might have been better if I had not learned this fact.

Delft.

estate sale 006

Reproduction bunny pottery which is adorable.

estate sale 008

An original colored and signed pencil drawing of a lovely European town.

estate sale 005

Nikko china from Japan.  The pattern is Dena.

I got twenty three pieces and of those eight are salad plates which I will use for dessert plates.

Price $15.00

estate sale 004

I also swung by a garage sale on the way home and bought two really nice vintage pieces.

Joe cannot believe I bought another lamp but I did!

Lamps and urns make me weak.

Very very weak.

The pitcher is old ironstone and is cracked and chipped but was $2.00 as was the lamp!

Debbie of  Talking Trash discussed with ya’ll that I have a closet full of lampshades just in case I need one.

My spare shades come from garage sales.

Pass the Tater’s Please

Party in the kitchen anyone?

Shelia at Note Songs is having a Heart of the Home Party.

heart_of_the_home_party[1]

This is our kitchen at the yellow house.

It is small but has a huge bar on one end.

Both of us love to cook in this efficient kitchen with our glass stovetop.

I have taken photos of some of the details I like best and the art work we have in the kitchen.

It has lovely views to the backyard where we feed birds.

kitchen 003 The large bar needed a commanding piece of art and this oil painting, found at an estate sale, is our favorite painting.

This is a vintage print, probably from the 1940’s, found at a thrift store. It has some damage but I adore the flowers and the soft colors. The frame has tiny pink scallops.

This tiny oil painting is leaning on the top of the stove and was found at a garage sale. All the people in it have on hats.

Corbels are underneath the massive bar. I call it the “autopsy table” sometimes. Which is sick nurse’s humor. It measures 49 inches across.

This makes  it difficult to pass the taters across!
