Estate Sale Pottery

Good Monday Morning Friends. I hope you all had a wonderful Father's day weekend. Joe, CC, and I did. I took Joe to brunch at Juniper in Ridge Spring, South Carolina after church. We had shrimp gumbo and magical grits I tell you.

Then we went to day two of a terrific estate sale where an interesting woman was moving to Hawaii and did not wish to ship her vintage and antique items. Lucky us. Hence I obtained the white tureen above.

The platter is from France and is a charmingly crazed old piece. The little green pitcher is Western Stoneware from Monmouth Illinois. I cannot find this piece anywhere online to date it or determine it's value. Right now ebay has only seven Monmouth pieces for sale that I could locate.

How about a little estate sale bling? This necklace, likely from the 1950's, is gorgeous. The earrings are not bad either.

This vintage evening bag appears dirty but it is actually some sort of patina on that surface which may be ivory or bone. It is much prettier in person.

I want to thank all of you who commented on the last post Tied To A Place. Those were the best and most well written comments I have received since my Hold Everything Lightly Series.

{Later today I am off to take photos in regards to my good news.}

Yellow Pottery

Yellow pottery makes me happy. Sometimes I have to work hard for this pottery by buying incredibly dirty objects. That yellow bowl is a McCoy planter which was one dollar. Hang on y'all there is an overload of yellow in this vignette but I am loving it.

This urn, in the cloche, was filthy and covered in grease but pristine when I washed it. I paid six dollars for it. Had it been clean it would have been twenty dollars. The little planters are vintage as well. The bottom one is a McCoy.

The vintage 1970's ginger jar lamp had not been dusted since 1980 at least {really people}. The shade was horrid but I paid two dollars and fifty cents for it. I checked that it had no cracks or chips on it and placed my own shade and finial. I have seen these sell for an enormous amount of money on One Kings Lane. I like this lamp so much it has replaced my beloved pineapple lamp.

If you have not checked out my Poise product review and sweepstakes please do here. The sweepstakes ends the end of the month.

Displaying Lemons

Lemons are an integral part of our culinary life. I slice them into iced tea, bake them over fish, and zest them into all manner of dishes. Why not display them beautifully? Here I have them paired with my favorite color of blue pottery. Lemons also look wonderful in clear glass dishes or hurricanes.

I have had this blue pottery compote, tray, and large Italian tray stored for a while but decided they needed to be on the kitchen island. Now, I should make lemon curd again. I also have red potatoes in a dough bowl and onions in another blue bowl. I like fruits and vegetables sitting around in bowls. It looks warm and cozy.

Kitchen Island Styling

I have been moving cookbooks and pottery around the kitchen island. In addition the pink camellia bush in the flower garden finally bloomed and floating a bloom in a pretty dish is easy styling. I cannot grow peonies in our heat but camellias thrive here.

Is that not a lovely pink?

Joe and I should be out in the early morning cold at garage sales by the time this posts providing I can manage to auto-post in the right month. Yesterday I found a vintage Easter basket at an estate sale and a couple of other items that have some vintage appeal. For a minute I could not think what I bought-I know a Turkey Platter (brown transferware from Japan). I am still trying to get myself together my friends.

What are you doing this weekend? Do tell. Whatever you do be a "good egg" as my book suggests.

Green Chippy Chair&McCoy

The green chippy chair has to be in my top ten thrifty finds.
I paid three dollars for it.
 And ran with it.

The McCoy planter is Joe's mother's.
We found it, intact, buried in the yard at our old house.
I posted about it a while back and my astute readers identified it as McCoy.
 It is unmarked.

Happy Sunday my astute friends

Gathered Whites

Whites gathered in a corner by the hearth.
That chippy wood piece is brimming with texture.

Stacked American pottery.
The large piece is an unmarked McCoy
found at a church sale for three dollars.
I bought it and gleefully ran.
Those little marks on the surface of the pot are often
called flea bites and might detract from the value.
I am not selling it any time soon.
Or ever.

I am traveling to our old house today where the Internet
is as slow as the house is old.
For my new followers(bless you), we have a tumble down antebellum home,
in Middle Georgia, that appears seldom on the blog.
I likely will visit friends, get my thirty three hairs cut, and rearrange some dust.

Thank you for you kind comments about the funeral.
Writing alleviates my inner turmoil.

White Fall Table

The urn I painted has joined vintage pottery and a garage sale lamp on our white table.

This is a good example of mixing old pottery with new.
The large white cachepot in an unmarked McCoy.

We bought this shade for six dollars, on clearance, from Target last year.
We were waiting for a lamp to pair it with.
Finally we came across this lamp on Saturday at a garage sale.
Total cost nine dollars.

The burlap like shade, lit, gives a soft glow to our yellow walls.

You can read about painting the large urn here.

McCoy:Two Favorites

I have had this turquoise piece of McCoy pottery for so long I do not remember where I bought it.
Or what I paid for it.
Which is unusual for me as I normally remember both.

This green urn came from a local flea market where 90% of the goods are
new and cheap but on that day I found a guy with McCoy.
This piece is fragile because the lip is cracked.
Because of that I got a good price for it.
It has a bird on the front side.
I have several other McCoy pieces I will save for another time.
These two are favorites of mine.

Estate Sales Five Tips

  1. Preview the sale online. I look at online photos and decide if I want to attend. I subscribe to www.estatesales.net. You can narrow the search to within whatever mile radius from your address that you wish. Mine is set at 100 miles. I am notified three days prior to the sale.
  2. Take a box with newspaper or bubble wrap. Often my hands cannot hold all I want to buy and the rooms are crowded with people.
  3. Get to know the estate sale agents in your area by name. Greet them by  name. Ask about items you are interested in.
  4. Ask the estate sale agent what their best price is nicely. Remember they are trying to make the most amount of money for the family they are selling for and for themselves. The agents I know routinely reduce prices for me.
  5. Ask if there are any out buildings, barns, or garages that have items for sale in them. I have found some of my best pieces in outbuildings in dark dusty corners.

A larger pitcher bought on Saturday from an estate sale priced at $36.00. The estate sale agent reduced the price almost by half when I asked for her best price. I have been shopping her sales for many years. I will be selling this artist signed pottery piece later on.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and well wishes yesterday.

Pottery and Life

March is nearly gone.
Joe and I have had an eventful month.
We are happy when the yellow house has guests and we have had guests.
We have one right now that has kept us vigilant all weekend.
I cannot really talk about this special guest but it has been fun.
Nevertheless we still awoke at o'dark thirty and went garage salen.

This vintage hanging planter was Joe's mother's.
It has been in one of our sheds covered in dirt.
It needed to make it's way inside don't you think?

We picked up this Italian bowl this morning at a sale.
It is signed by the artist and depicts a part of the Italian coast we have visited.

 Sweet hands in Pencil Sketch.

Now we are off to supper with friends who recently returned from a mission trip to Honduras for three weeks.

I fear I may never catch up in commenting, please forgive me.

Old Beat Up Pottery Makes Us Happy

We found a lovely old beat up piece of pottery at an estate sale on Saturday.

We think it is from the 1920's.
It is perfect for our now fading hydrangeas.

Joe and I love and collect old southern pottery.

The top has numerous chips but the flowers are a perfect cover for them.
Because it was day two of the sale the crock was $12.00. We consider that a very good price.

Two vintage bowls make the tabletop country style and that is fine with us.

I could have put a vintage runner there but I am slipping due to motorcycle fatigue but that is another story.

I am linking with Marty at A Stroll Thru Life for Table Top Tuesday.
